Why This Skeet Shooting Range is Worth the Drive to Texas

Updated: 12 minutes ago

Imagine standing in the heart of the Brenham countryside, shotgun in hand, watching clay pigeons sail through the air above rolling green pastures. Talk about an experience that gets your heart pumping and leaves you grinning from ear to ear.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that Rockin' Star Ranch's brand new skeet shooting range is officially open.

It’s not every day you get to combine the relaxing charm of ranch life with the rush of watching clay pigeons shatter into pieces. And the best part is, anyone can give it a try (though if you’re under 18, you’ll need to bring a parent to join the fun). Ages 13+

Whether you've never shot skeet in your life or you're the type who can hit a clay target with your eyes closed, our skeet shooting range offers something for everyone.

What Makes Our Skeet Shooting Range Different

Not all skeet shooting ranges are created equal, and ours proves it.

Built to National Skeet Shooting Association specifications, our range provides the same professional setup used in competitions nationwide. It also accommodates different skill levels while maintaining strict safety standards.

And then there’s the setting.

Instead of crowded ranges, you get clear views to rival any in Texas, green pastures all around, and sunsets that make those late-afternoon sessions unforgettable.

It’s the perfect activity for a corporate retreat, wedding party, or family reunion, and we’ve got the space and equipment to make it memorable.

Skeet Shooting 101: The Basics You Need to Know

Skeet shooting started in the 1920s as practice for bird hunters. Today, it’s grown into a competitive sport with a simple concept: break clay targets launched from two different positions before they hit the ground.

Eight shooting stations are arranged in a semicircle, with targets flying from two “houses”, one high, one low. As you progress through the stations, the angles change to keep you on your toes.

Safety comes first, and there are a few simple skeet shooting rules that must be followed at all times:

  • Always wear eye and ear protection

  • Keep your gun pointed downrange

  • Don’t load your firearm until you’re ready to shoot

  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot

These are non-negotiables that keep everyone safe and having fun.

The equipment is also pretty straightforward. You need a shotgun, specially designed shells loaded with small pellets, and proper protection. We can provide everything you need for a safe, fun day at the range.

What makes this sport so perfect is how easy it is for anyone to join in. Your teenager who’s never held a gun can easily learn alongside your grandfather, who’s been hunting for decades. Everyone follows the same rules of skeet shooting and gets the same rush when they connect.

Tips to Hit Your Target Every Time

Ready to improve your game?

These skeet shooting tips will have you breaking clays like a pro:

Get Your Stance Right

Plant your feet and stay relaxed. Your front foot should point toward the target area, weight slightly forward. Think athletic position: stable enough so the gun’s kickback won’t throw you off, but loose enough to rotate smoothly as you track the target.

Master the Art of Following

Instead of trying to point and shoot where the clay pigeon is right now, you need to lead it, aiming where it's going to be

Start by finding the target early, then track it smoothly. Jerky movements will throw off your aim faster than anything.

Timing Is Everything

Don't rush your shot, but don't wait forever either. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Call for the target when you're ready

  • Find it quickly & track it smoothly

  • Fire when it feels right

You’ll eventually develop a rhythm that becomes automatic with practice.

Read Those Angles

Different stations require different approaches. High house targets come fast and drop quickly, while low house targets rise before falling. Station 1 gives you above-the-head shots, while Station 7 gives you straight aways. Pay attention to how each station feels different.

Keep Your Head in the Game

Stay calm, and don't let a few misses get in your head. Even pros miss targets regularly! Focus on the target in front of you, not the one you missed two stations back.

Meet Merril!

We offer private instruction from Merril Stanfield, a champion shooter who knows exactly what it takes to hit those targets consistently. Merril started competitive skeet shooting in 2017 and quickly discovered her passion, eventually attending 15 tournaments a year.

Her accomplishments include 2021 28 Gauge Open Junior World Champion, 2021 20 Gauge Open Junior World Runner-Up, and multiple Ladies Junior World Championships. She's been a member of both the Ladies Kreighoff All American Team and Team Kolar, proving her expertise at the highest levels.

What makes Merril a great instructor is her understanding that not everyone has access to top-tier facilities. She truly appreciates what Rockin' Star Ranch offers — NSSA-level amenities for anyone wanting to learn, regardless of experience level.

The Complete Ranch Experience

What really sets our skeet shooting range apart from the competition is that it's just one piece of an incredible ranch vacation. You're not driving to some standalone facility and heading home afterward. You're staying right here, where the fun continues long after your last shot.

Start your morning with a trail ride through our property, taking in the Texas countryside from horseback. After lunch, head over to the skeet shooting range with your group for an afternoon of friendly competition.

As the day winds down, head back to your cabin for a dip in the pool, or relax on the porch with a cold drink while swapping stories about who hit the most targets.

This setup is perfect for corporate groups looking to mix team building with genuine fun.

Skeet shooting has a way of bringing people together and getting them laughing, especially when the person who talked the biggest game misses their first few shots!.

Add in our cozy cabins and idyllic surroundings, and you’ve got a getaway that’ll keep people talking for years.

Wedding parties love the combination, too. While some guests are getting pampered, others can blow off some steam at the range. Or make it a couples activity  — there's nothing quite like a little friendly competition between future spouses.

After your time at our skeet shooting range, you've got fishing in our stocked ponds, or simply the luxury of doing absolutely nothing in some of the most beautiful countryside Brenham has to offer.
