Night time horse riding in Texas just hits differently. The temperature finally drops to a pleasant degree, the trails go quiet… and the view above is truly somethin’ else.
Away from the glow of Houston and Austin, the Brenham skies at night will make you wonder why you’ve been heading to bed so early. There’s a reason we’re called Rockin’ Star Ranch, and after dark, you’ll see why for yourself.
We offer two ways to experience night time horse riding here: Full Moon Rides and Starry Night Rides. Here’s what you need to know about both before deciding which dreamy experience to choose.
What Makes Night Time Horse Riding Different?
If you've only ever ridden during the day, you might be wondering what makes a night ride so special. And the answer is, pretty much everything.
Daytime rides at Rockin’ Star are already worth the trip — winding trails through the rolling Texas landscape, cattle, goats, and even a few friendly dogs to make you smile along the way, and the kind of serenity you can only find away from the city.
But after dark, a hush falls over the land, making it seem even more magical than before. The midday heat and buzz of everyday life disappear, and the sights and sounds become a little more intimate and a whole lot sharper.
What to Expect on a Night Ride
Your experience starts the same way all Rockin’ Star rides do. You’ll be introduced to your horse and strike up a friendship by grooming and getting them ready before hitting the trails.
If you’re a first-time rider, no need to worry. Our wranglers will make sure you feel confident before you ride — no one’s heading out into the dark before you’re ready.
Out on the trail, the pace is relaxed, and the ride is guided the whole way. Darrell and the Rockin’ Star team know these trails like the back of their hand and will point out all the sights as you trot along.
Plan for a couple of hours from start to finish, and wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dusty. Everything else, the ranch will sort out for you.
Full Moon Rides
Full Moon Rides run on the day of the full moon, plus the day before and after, giving you a three-day window to plan around work, life, and travel.
If you’re new to horseback riding at night, a full moon is a great place to start. The trail is bathed in a moon-lit glow, the air is cool, and it all feels a bit like a dream.
And honestly, when it comes to riding under the full moon, it’s one of those things you just need to experience to fully understand. While it sounds nice in theory, we’re willing to bet the reality is better than anything you could ever imagine.
These rides do sell out, so if you've got a date in mind, don't sit on it.
Starry Night Rides
If you’ve spent most of your life in or near a city, there’s a good chance you’ve never seen the stars in all their glory. But our Starry Night Rides will fix that for you real quick.
Starry Night Rides run during the new moon and are every bit as exquisite as they sound. Since they’re on the opposite end of the lunar calendar, there’s no moon trying to compete with the stars for your attention. Be sure to bring along someone you like — there’s nothing like sitting under a starry sky in peaceful camaraderie with friends or loved ones.
Spending the night horse riding under a new moon sky is a completely different experience from the full moon version. It’s all a little quieter, a little darker, but equally spectacular as you gaze at a blanket of stars that makes you feel very small in the best possible way.

Which One Should You Book?
We might be a bit biased, but honestly — both! But if you have to choose one to start with:
Go for the Full Moon Ride if you want the most visually dramatic night time horse riding experience. Or if someone in your group is a little nervous about horseback riding at night, and would appreciate some natural lighting overhead.
Go for the Starry Night Ride if you're specifically after that pitch-dark, stars-galore situation. It's quieter, darker, and in its own way, just as impressive.
Either way, the riding experience is the same as a daytime trail ride at Rockin' Star Ranch — same horses, same guides, same process for getting saddled up and out on the trail, just with some extra-special scenery overhead.

There’s no need to rush home when your ride ends; you can continue to bask in the happy glow in one of our cozy, well-appointed cabins. Waking up on the ranch the morning after a night time horse riding experience is a pretty solid way to start a day. Coffee, open land, no alarm, no agenda.
And if the ride has you wanting more, it's easy enough to pair a stay with local wine tasting, a trip into Brenham, or just doing nothing in particular at a very enjoyable pace.
